Abruzzo
The Abruzzo wine region is located in central Italy, about two hours drive east of Rome. It stretches for 130 kilometres along the Adriatic coast and has many rugged mountains. Some of the best vineyards are on hills with views of the ocean in the distance. The climate is Mediterranean with plenty of sunshine along the coast.

In the 1970s and 1980s, Abruzzo was dominated by large wine cooperatives. Most families sold their grapes to the cooperatives, which produced affordable and cheap wines. However, in the last 20 years, family estates have started to develop and produce their own wines that emphasise organic farming and terroir. The star varieties of the region are the native red Montepulciano and the white Trebbiano.
