Vin de Pétanque is a charming red wine from Mas de Libian, made from a field blend (75% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 5% Mourvèdre, plus small amounts of Counoise & Vaccarèse) grown biodynamically in clay-limestone soil with galets (pebbles). The grapes are spontaneously fermented in tanks, with a short maceration (~5 days), after which the wine is pressed and aged briefly. Bottled unprocessed and without added sulphur – a summery, lively and casual wine designed to be enjoyed as the name suggests.

Mas de Libian is a biodynamic winery in southern Ardèche, in the Rhône Valley, known for producing vibrant natural wines full of character, with a strong connection to both the land and the family’s history. The estate has been owned by the Thibon family since 1670, but it wasn’t until the 1970s that they began bottling wine under their own name. Today, sisters Hélène and Catherine Thibon, along with the next generation, carry on the tradition of organic and biodynamic viticulture – certified Demeter since 2005.

The vineyards are planted on ancient river terraces filled with limestone, clay, and round stones – classic southern Rhône terroir – and span about 25 hectares. The focus is on local grape varieties like Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Cinsault, along with smaller plantings of Vaccarèse, Counoise, and white varieties such as Viognier and Roussanne. All vineyard work is done by hand, with help from the estate’s two horses, Nestor and Bambi. Harvesting is manual, and the wines are made naturally, with spontaneous fermentation, no fining, and only minimal additions of sulfur.

Mas de Libian is especially known for its natural red wines that combine freshness with depth. Their “Vin de Pétanque” is light, fruity, and ideal for everyday enjoyment, while “Bout d’Zan” is a more structured cuvée with complexity and aging potential.

The style at Mas de Libian is honest, grounded, and free of unnecessary intervention – the wines taste of Rhône, of nature, and of people with conviction. These are wines with soul and substance, crafted from a philosophy rooted in ecology, balance, and respect for terroir. Mas de Libian is a perfect choice for anyone seeking biodynamic Rhône wine with depth, freshness, and true character.
