Austria · Burdenland
In the gentle, rolling landscape around Horitschon in Burgenland we find Theresa and Bernhard Liszt – a family-owned winery where the passion for natural wine, biodynamic wine and organic viticulture goes hand in hand with a deep respect for local traditions. The couple took over the estate from Bernhard’s family and have since left their personal mark on both vineyard work and winemaking, always with a focus on living soils and the grapes’ natural expression.
The vineyards consist of old parcels with clay-rich, mineral-laden soils, cultivated according to regenerative, organic and biodynamic principles. Here, local grape varieties such as Blaufränkisch, Zweigelt and St. Laurent thrive, alongside smaller plantings of international grapes which, in the hands of the Liszt family, gain a distinctly Burgenland identity. All work is carried out manually – from pruning to harvest – without synthetic chemicals or artificial fertilizers.
In the cellar, the philosophy is simple: minimal intervention, spontaneous fermentation, no fining, and only a little or no added sulfur. The wines are aged in used oak barrels or stainless steel tanks, depending on the needs of the grape and the vintage. The result is pure, vibrant wines with a clear sense of terroir, great drinkability and a natural balance between freshness and depth.
Theresa and Bernhard Liszt do not work with grand gestures, but with quiet precision, where each glass tells the story of Burgenland’s soil, climate and winemaking tradition. Their wines are an honest expression of craftsmanship and nature – made to be enjoyed, shared and remembered.
