France Rhône Rasteau

In the heart of the southern Rhône, near Rasteau, lies Domaine Élodie Balme – a small, family-owned winery where energy, precision and respect for nature go hand in hand. Élodie Balme established her own domaine in 2006 after working with her father and renowned winemaker Marcel Richaud, who taught her the value of listening to the grapes rather than controlling them. Her approach to winemaking is driven by craftsmanship, honesty and a strong belief that wine should express its place – not the technology behind it.

The vineyard covers around 12 hectares of vineyards around Rasteau, Roaix and Buisson – an area characterised by clay, limestone and red sandstone, where the mistral and sunny climate create ideal conditions for ripe, aromatic grapes with natural freshness. Élodie cultivates her fields according to organic principles, and the work in the fields is carried out gently and manually with a focus on soil balance and biodiversity.

The main grape varieties are the classics of the southern Rhône – Grenache, Syrah and Carignan – which are vinified with spontaneous fermentation, no fining and only minimal amounts of sulphur. Some cuvées are made without any additions, and the ageing takes place in cement and concrete vats to preserve the energy of the grapes and the nerve of the terroir. The result is wines with a vibrant freshness, ripe fruit and a lightness that sets Élodie Balme apart from the heavier traditions of the region.
