In the northern part of the Loire, near Saumur in the Bourgueil appellation, you will find Claire and Florent Béjon – a small, uncompromising winery that in a few years has become one of the most respected names in natural Loire wines. The couple began their adventure in the early 2000s with a clear goal: to make pure, unfiltered wines that reflect the soil, the grapes and the deep roots of the old vines – without additives and without manipulation.
They now have small plots of old vines – many over 60 years old – planted on clay and limestone soils in and around Restigné and Benais. All field work is done manually, without herbicides or pesticides, and with great respect for the ecosystem. The Béjon family works according to organic and biodynamic principles, but without seeking certification; for them, it is not about labels, but about honesty and trust between winemaker, land and consumer.
The focus is almost exclusively on Cabernet Franc, the classic red grape of the Loire, which here takes on a more vibrant and rustic expression than in many conventional versions. The grapes are harvested by hand and fermented spontaneously in old cement tanks or open vats, often with whole bunches to preserve freshness and structure. No fining, no filtration and no addition of sulfur – the wines are bottled “comme ça”, directly from the tank when they are ready.
The wines of Claire and Florent Béjon are characterized by purity, deep fruit and precision – Cabernet Franc with lively acidity, ripe red berries and a discreet spicy touch from the terroir. They can seem almost Burgundian in texture: light on the foot, but with intensity and nerve. The style is immediate and uncompromising, but at the same time full of balance and energy, making them some of the most sought-after natural wines from the Loire.
For Claire and Florent Béjon, wine is not a product, but a craft – a direct connection between land, people and vintage. Their work is proof that natural wine from the Loire can be both wild, precise and deeply true to its terroir – while also carrying a personality that makes each bottle an experience in itself.
