In the northern part of Germany’s Rheingau region, just outside the small town of Lorch, you’ll find Weingut Eva Fricke – a winery founded in 2006 by Eva Fricke, after working with prestigious producers across the world and in Germany, including a formative stint at Leitz. Originally from Bremen, with no family background in winemaking, her journey into wine has been anything but conventional.
What started as a side project with a few rented plots has grown into around 17 hectares of vineyards, spread across steep, stony slopes in Lorch, Eltville, and Kiedrich. These sites include some of Rheingau’s highest and most remote parcels – often overlooked for generations – where quartzite and slate soils meet cool, windy microclimates. The result is Riesling with striking clarity, freshness, and depth.
Riesling is Eva’s main focus – not just as a grape, but as a transparent lens through which to express terroir. The farming is organic and vegan-certified, with great attention to biodiversity and soil health. Everything is harvested by hand, and in the cellar, she works with natural ferments, long lees contact, and minimal intervention to preserve purity and site expression.
Her wines range from crisp and elegant Gutswein to precise and mineral-driven single-vineyard Rieslings from sites like Lorcher Krone and Schlossberg. They share a common thread: a calm intensity, salty finesse, and a quiet self-confidence that reflects both the place and the person behind them.
Eva Fricke has earned her place as one of Rheingau’s most thoughtful and trailblazing winemakers. With her focus on sustainability, forgotten vineyards, and an uncompromising commitment to quality, she has shown that even the quietest corners of the Rheingau can produce wines of world-class elegance and soul.
