On the western side of Møn, right by the coast, you will find BAS Winery, a Danish winery founded by Jørgen Laustsen with the ambition of exploring just how far Danish wine can go. What began as experiments with winemaking around 15 years ago has developed into a serious project focused on Danish natural wine, organic farming and a great curiosity for grape varieties, fruit and different methods in the cellar.
The winery is based at Basnæsgård, a 17-hectare organic farm on the western side of Møn, surrounded by vineyards, meadows, woodland and coastal landscapes. The vineyards are planted on south- and west-facing slopes with limestone-rich soils and direct exposure to the sea. The combination of long Nordic summer days, sea breezes and a relatively dry local microclimate allows BAS to work in a distinctly cool-climate environment while preserving freshness and acidity in the grapes.
BAS works with hand-harvested organic grapes and fruit from both its own vineyards and selected organic growers. In the cellar, the philosophy is one of minimal intervention, with Jørgen freely experimenting with different grape varieties, maceration, barrel ageing and naturally sparkling wines. The range therefore spans everything from classic white and red wines to orange wines, pét-nats and more experimental creations, where Danish apples can also play a role.
Curiosity is at the heart of BAS. The aim is not to produce the same wine every year, but to work with the character of each vintage and explore which grapes and methods perform best under Danish conditions. Some wines are made exclusively from Danish-grown grapes, while others are produced using organic grapes sourced from partner growers.
BAS Winery is part of a new wave of Danish winemaking and natural wine production, where Møn's distinctive climate and limestone-rich soils meet a free and experimental approach to winemaking. It is a project that does not try to imitate classic wine regions, but instead explores how wines from Denmark and Møn can develop a unique identity of their own.
