Hofgut Falkenstein

Germany · Mosel · Saar

In the small village of Niedermennig in the Saar valley, you'll find Hofgut Falkenstein – a family-run winery where time seems to move at its own pace. The estate was founded in 1985 by Erich Weber and is now run together with his son Johannes. From their historic farmhouse and surrounding vineyards, the Webers have built one of Germany’s most characterful and traditional expressions of Riesling.

Their vines grow on steep, high-altitude slopes across classic Saar sites such as Krettnacher Altenberg, Niedermenniger Herrenberg, and the iconic Euchariusberg. The soils are rich in grey slate and quartz, and the cool, breezy climate results in wines that are light, crisp, and bracingly mineral – true to the Saar’s historical style.

All vineyard work is done by hand, and in the cellar, everything is fermented in traditional 1,000-liter oak Fuder barrels. Each wine is made from a single fermentation – never blended – and bottled with its own AP number and name, often inspired by local people, places, or stories. The result is that every bottle is a unique expression – a kind of “single cask Riesling” with a clear sense of identity.

The wines range from dry and elegant Kabinett and Spätlese to lightly off-dry feinherb styles with gentle perlage from natural residual fermentation. They’re delicate in body but full of character and authenticity. Their style is understated but expressive – never trendy, always timeless.

At Hofgut Falkenstein, wine isn’t a product but a craft and a narrative. Each bottle tells a story – of place, of people, of patience – and carries forward a living Saar tradition rooted in simplicity, precision, and deep local connection.
