Menu Pineau

Menu Pineau, also known as Arbois or Orbois, is an ancient white grape variety native to France's Loire Valley. Its cultivation dates back to at least the 16th century, with early mentions by writer François Rabelais.

Historically, Menu Pineau was widely planted in the Loire region. Over time, its prominence declined, and today it is primarily found in limited areas within the Loire Valley, notably in appellations like Cheverny, Touraine, and Valençay.

The grape is valued for its resilience in the vineyard, particularly its resistance to diseases and adaptability to various climatic conditions. However, it tends to produce wines with moderate acidity and relatively neutral flavors, which has led to its frequent use as a blending component rather than for varietal wines.

In recent years, there has been a renewed interest in Menu Pineau among some winemakers who appreciate its historical significance and potential when cultivated with care.

As of 2004, plantings of Menu Pineau had declined to fewer than 300 hectares. By 2011, global cultivation was approximately 100 hectares. Recent figures indicate that in France, there are 197 hectares dedicated to this variety, with a downward trend.
