New Chinon Blanc from Bonnigal & Bodet Vignerons

Bonjour from Jean-Baptiste and Stéphane

Bonjour lovely winefriend,

We finally have some new Chenin blanc!

Touraine Amboise
Bonnigal & Bodet Vignerons is located in Limeray, in Loire Valley. The winery originated in 1927 and has been family owned since. We in the present time have the pleasure of tastings the wines from the fourth generation Bonnigal, Jean-Baptiste Bonnigal. Jean-Baptiste is making wine with his longtime friend Stéphane Bodet, whom operates the vineyard.

All (almost) Chenin Blanc
The wines are produced under the appellation of Touraine Amboise. They believe that most of the work is to be done in the vineyards: tillage, valuing the ecosystem, respecting nature and the environment. We currently have home 4 different Cuvée on Chenin Blanc and one on Pineau d'Aunis.

We love Chenin Blanc
It is a grape with diverse characteristics and outcomes. The grape comes from Anjou in Val de Loire and appeared in the beginning under the synonym Plant d'Anjou. It dates back to 1496 where Thomas Bohier planted it. Thomas' brother in law Denis Briconnet was Abbot at the monastery Montchenin, where he cultivated many varieties from all over France. The one called Plant d'Anjou turned out the be the best, probably why it is today called Chenin, after the monastery ;)

DNA parentage analysis shows a parent-offspring relationship with the grape Savagnin and a probabilistic analysis of DNA has shown that Troussau, Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc is most likely siblings offsprings of Savagnin.

Natural fermentation
The work in the cellar is kept to a minimum allowing the terroir and the grapes to express themselves. The ageing tends to be long in oak barrels on the lees.
